I grew up on along the border in the city of El Paso, TX. Even with a population close to 2.5 million, it felt as if we existed in a bubble. Quarantined from rest of the known world when it came to art.
As any child that grew up on the south side, or “El Barrio”, I was definitely not a child of privilege. It wasn't until I met my mentor, Mauricio Olague, a local Chicano artist, who was also the art teacher for my middle school. That I was introduced to the world of Rothko, Warhol, along with other great artists, and opened the door to a world that would soon be my life.
After the awkward teens, I decided on a whim to not attend Brown University in hopes of pursuing a medical degree. I was on a plane to the dirty south, after being accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design, despite never taking an art class before. While at SCAD I studied design with emphasis in Sequential Arts. As many artists, I was not satisfied with one area of study, something completely different, that is when I enrolled in the Metals101. At first it was one class, then grew to a minor, then ended as a major. Like a domino effect, it did not stop; I later started taking classes in Fashion Design, and photography. All of which help me hone my skill to what it is today.
Since college, I have relocated to Chicago, IL, where I am still learning, and gaining the experiences in the industry of Jewelry Design. I work by day and let my creativity flow at night. I craft, create, and live the artist life while trying to pursue my career as a designer, and constantly learn new ways to improve my work.
